Eastern State Hospital cares for adult psychiatric inpatients on our campus in Medical Lake, Wash., which is located 15 miles west of downtown Spokane. We opened in 1891, and ever since then the hospital has played a vital role in helping generations of Washington state residents receive evaluation and inpatient therapy and treatment for mental illness.
Eastern State Hospital hosts both the Eastlake and Westlake campuses. We are a 375-bed in-patient psychiatric hospital serving adults and are accredited by the Joint Commission and certified by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The Joint Commission is a global driver of quality improvement and patient safety in health care.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services serves the public as a trusted partner and steward, dedicated to advancing health equity, expanding coverage, and including health outcomes.
It is important to know that if you believe you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis that Eastern State Hospital is not a designated crisis responder (DCR) – or in other words, the first resource to pursue.
In Spokane County, Frontier Behavioral Health serves as the region’s most comprehensive DCR. In neighboring Stevens County, the DCR that serves residents there is New Alliance Counseling Services.

Unlike patients at those hospitals who may voluntarily seek help, patients at Eastern State Hospital have been involuntarily detained either through a court order or from medical professionals serving at a DCR or hospital.
ESH is one of two state-operated psychiatric hospitals for adults in the state of Washington, and primarily serves patients from eastern counties. Western State Hospital, the other state-operated psychiatric hospital for adults, primarily serves people from western Washington.
