DDA 101: Training for Providers

The following DDA 101 Provider Training online curriculum satisfies the Residential Guidelines & Positive Behavior Support training required for Certified Residential Service Providers as described in WAC 388-101-3290 and the Employment & Day program Positive Behavior Support training requirement described in DDD Policy 6.13. This curriculum may also be used towards continuing education requirements for Alternative Living and Companion Home Providers operating under WAC 388-829A and WAC 388-829C. This training does not meet the 18 hour DDA Specialty Training for AFH and Assisted Living facilities. For credit towards any other service type, please inquire with your regional program contact.

Key Elements of DDA 101

  1. What is Positive Behavior Support? It is an approach for dealing with challenging behavior that focuses on changing the environment and skill deficits that contribute to the person's problem behavior.
  2. Does all behavior have a purpose, even a challenging one? Challenging behaviors are messages about unmet needs and the quality of a person's life.
  3. Why is it important to know if a person has physical or psychological pain or/and is on medication? Many people who exhibit challenging behavior do so because they don't feel well. This must be the first place for understanding behavior.
  4. Why is it important for people with developmental disabilities to have choices? If the person's behavior challenges you, help them find more desirable ways to express the need that underlies the behavior.
  5. Why would we want to help a person with developmental disabilities have more fun? Fun is a powerful antidote to challenging behaviors.
  6. Why would you want to have a good relationship with the medical care provider if the person has a challenging behavior? Physicians, like many other people, have difficulty understanding the communication of a person with substantial disabilities. Help the physician to understand the person's ways of communicating.
