State Hospital patient dies

LAKEWOOD – A 53-year-old Western State Hospital patient died Saturday night after choking during dinner at the hospital Thursday night.

Hospital employees performed first-aid measures and called 911 around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The patient was transported by Medic One to a local hospital, but did not regain consciousness. After consulting with the patient’s guardian, doctors there removed life-support systems on Saturday morning. The patient passed away Saturday night.

Western State Hospital conducts internal and external reviews of all unexpected deaths. Support for employees and other patients was provided throughout the weekend and will continue as long as needed.
