Diversion Cash Assistance (DCA)

Revised Jan. 1, 2025

What is Diversion Cash Assistance?

Diversion Cash Assistance provides an alternative form of cash assistance for families who have a short-term need and do not want to receive that assistance through the federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program.

Who is eligible:

Families who meet the income and resource requirements and can demonstrate they expect to have income and resources to meet their long-term needs are eligible. Families who receive this assistance are expected not to need TANF assistance for the next 12 months. Income and resource requirements are the same for TANF and Family Medical. In determining net income, we disregard the first $500 and then count only half of earned income, and we give clients credit for child support that is paid by the family.

Benefits:

Diversion can help with such expenses as:

  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Medical bills
  • Employment
  • Child care

If you choose to receive DCA:

  • You are eligible for only one 30-day period per year.
  • The maximum benefit is $2,000.
  • You must repay a prorated portion of the grant if you go on TANF less than one year later.
  • You will not use any of your 60-month lifetime limit for TANF benefits.
  • You must meet all the eligibility rules for TANF or State Family Assistance as outlined in WAC 388-400-0005.
    • However, you are not subject to WorkFirst requirements, child support assignment or TANF time limits.
