Aging, Longevity and Wellbeing

Washington State’s Strategic Actions Now and for the Future

Over a decade ago, Washington’s leaders convened for the first-ever “Aging Summit” to address the needs of our growing, older adult and disabled populations. The Summit helped launch several progressive ideas and policy directions that helped cement Washington as a national leader in Long-Term Services and Supports. (View the 2013 Aging Summit Report).

Today, programs such as WA Cares, the first-in-the-nation long-term insurance program, the Medicaid Transformation Demonstration, and the Dementia Action Collaborative are helping all Washingtonians continue to thrive as they age, by expanding opportunities for choice, independence and access to supports and services.

The Work Continues

In May 2024, state leaders and advocates regrouped with fresh perspectives to collaborate and identify possibilities for the next phase of aging and longevity for Washingtonians. The discussions focused on fostering a longevity-focused economy; social determinants of health, disrupting ageism, building an Age-and Dementia-Friendly Washington, and implementing collaborative change across all Washington’s sectors through the development of a Multisector Plan for Aging (MPA).

The Vision

Communities that value and support Washington’s older adults and people living with disabilities. Supports and services delivered across the life course that strengthen opportunities to live and thrive with dignity, safety choice, and independence.
